I am directing the Secretary of Defense to expand rapidly and substantially, in cooperation with our Allies, the orientation of existing forces for the conduct of non-nuclear war, paramilitary operations, and sub-limited or unconventional wars. In addition, our special forces and unconventional warfare units will be increased and reoriented. Throughout the services new emphasis must be placed on the special skills and languages which are required to work with local populations.

President John F Kennedy, speech delivered before a joint session of Congress on May 25, 1961.

In these days we commemorate president John F. Kennedy on the 50th Anniversary of his death. JFK was a World War II hero and a decorated former seaman. As the president of the USA, he tried to pursue an active international policy. This innovative and brave statesman perceived the need for special operations units as a response to the global challanges. President Kennedy supported the rebuilding of the Special Forces and the establishment of the U.S. Navy SEAL teams in 1962. These efforts increased the unconventional warfare capability of the U.S. armed forces.
Today we pay tribute to president Kennedy and recall him as a visionary and an ambitious leader.
